Magazine Construction

Magazine Front Cover Construction

One of my ancillary tasks will be to create a front cover for a horror magazine based around my video product. Below will consist the construction which has created my front cover.

After analysing multiple magazine products, I have found that most have the main image as the background. I will stick to common conventions, therefore I have done this also.

The first thing I will do is ensure the canvas and image size is the correct proportion for a magazine front cover. I will make sure the width is 8 inches and the length is 11 inches.

The picture I will use for my background is my main image, the image will be of my antagonist. After choosing this image I discovered the image was too light to be a horror magazine, therefore the next thing I have done is darkened the image. I started by adjusting the shadows and highlights in my image. I made the lighter shadows 14% and darken highlights 8%.

I continued to darken my picture. I have changed the brightness and contrast levels. I lowered the brightness to -57 and increase the contrast to 21.

All the settings were correct for the image, however to increase the darkness even more I used the brush tool and the opacity on 50% to darken both sides of the antagonist's face, leaving a strip of light to go down the middle of his face.

To make the image perfect to use as a background I will need to change the brown top corners. I did this by selecting the eyedropper tool to pick up the same colour from the antagonist's hood. Once I had selected the colour I used the brush tool to paint the corners. I ensured that the opacity of the brush was set to 100%. The picture below shows the image with black corners.

I felt like the antagonist was portrayed too friendly in this image, therefore I used the brush tool and set the opacity to 50% to give my antagonist red eyes. This was to make it clear to my audience, and magazine viewers, that this character is evil.

The next thing I will do is create a barcode to go on the front of the magazine. I created my barcode using a publishing program.

This is barcode I will use for my image:

After adding the barcode to my magazine, the most important thing to add next was the Masthead. I decided to name my magazine after the sub-genre of horror my video was 'Slasher'. I have used the font 'Unknown' and the colour red to symbolise blood. The font stands out as it is clear and bold. It also gives off a horror effect.

Important information the viewer might want to know is the issue number and the price of the magazine. Therefore the next thing I added onto my front cover was this. I used the font 'Haettenschweiler' in the colour yellow. The colour yellow contrasts against the red and the black colours already on my magazine. I have decided that the colours I will stick to for branding will consist of red, yellow, black and white.

Since this magazine is about my horror video product, the next thing I will add is the product name. 'I see you' is the title of my production. I have used the font 'The Gonjuring' and the darker colour red. This is the same colour the text is on my product, therefore it links.

Feedback from other reporters and reviewers is important to the audience, they feel as if they can trust other opinions, and this will increase the amount of sales. I added the review as 'Truly terrifying' with five stars. The higher the stars the more interested viewers will be.

Other than the main story, cover lines are very important, it lets the readers know what else is inside the magazine. However my main image was extremely close up, therefore I didn't want to add multiple cover stories as this would cover the main image too much, because of this I decided to add one cover story and a free badge instead. Most magazines contain something free to help catch the viewer's eye. I decided to create my own badge with the name of my production on. I have added this to the top right of my magazine, using the colours of my branding.

Finally as my magazine doesn't have many cover stories, I think its important that the main story does. I have added an 'Exclusive' sign. When readers see the exclusive sign it will persuade them more to by the magazine as it is the first place which news has been released.

This is my finished front cover for my magazine.
